5 Unexpected Applications of Vermiculite

Site Administrator • March 22, 2022

Vermiculite is a natural material that’s used primarily in soil to improve a plant’s health. However, there are other unexpected applications of vermiculite ; here are five items and industries that use vermiculite.

Feed

One unexpected application for vermiculite is animal feed. Feeds are easy for animals to eat, since the pieces are small and easy to pick up. And since the substance is also soft and absorbent, it helps animals soak up nutrients such as fat to improve their diets.

Gardening

Since vermiculite is a natural compound, it makes for a great additive for composting. It fosters the growth of plants while aerating the soil and locking in moisture. The mineral’s balance of air and water also improves root growth, and it doesn’t need any additives, since it’s sterile when treated.

Packing

Many packing materials are recyclable. However, for them to be able to break down and be reused, they need to contain natural minerals and materials, such as vermiculite and paper.

Automotive

The automotive industry used to utilize asbestos as a filler material for linings on brake panels and rubber seals. However, since asbestos is abrasive and dangerous, it was swapped out for vermiculite, which is natural, nonabrasive, safe, and nonoxidative.

Construction

Construction materials still have problems with asbestos, but this issue isn’t as bad as it was in the 1970s. Up until the ’70s, many builders used asbestos to insulate areas such as attics. However, asbestos created many more problems than it fixed, such as health issues. Many contractors then placed vermiculite over the asbestos to remedy the issue. Vermiculite is natural and won’t harm you, but it can become dangerous to be around if it comes into contact with asbestos.
